Umbrella Obsession
I guess I'm not the only one with an minor umbrella obsession. This week's Slate Shopping column is all about them! My recent obsession with umbrellas stems from a few factors: 1) They actually aren't that cheap; even at the grocery store, they still cost upwards of $15-- a lot for something breakable and 'disposable', 2) They were super cheap in Holland, for whatever reason-- I'm talking the equivalent of $3 to $6, even for large ones, 3) It's harder than you'd think to find a cute one that isn't basic black, and 4) I'm always breaking them. Dari is also obsessed with umbrellas-- one of his first words was 'breya', when he was walking around with one of my many half-broken umbrellas.

My latest umbrella is super-cute, but when it gets a gust of wind, I'm guessing it won't hold up. We'll see! At least it's a cute orange and pink. I just don't get the basic black umbrella thing: if I'm going to put at least a bit of thought into my bags or shoes or other accessories, don't I want a cute umbrella too? The Dutch had it down; you could go to any store and there were tons of cool umbrellas for 4 euros. Now if only Chinatown would discover the $3 umbrella that's actually cute...

Slate: Un-brellas: How should you stay dry?
eBags: ShedRain Rain Gems (same model as my umbrella, but not the same color)
Eddie Bauer: Compact Mini Umbrella (really cute-- and actually cheap!)
Coach: Personal Accessories (the cutest-- but not worth the splurge, in my opinion!)

The cutest of the cute-- but 148 dollahs??!!
