Jay McCarroll: Raving Lunatic!
Oh no! It's sad to hear that Jay, the winner of Project Runway, has apparently turned into a Stark Raving DIVA.

Gwen Fruit
Salon takes on Gwen Stefani's Japanese Harajuku obsession. I've been wondering about her little posse of Japanese girls that follow her around like those creatures in Pikmin. Didn't Madonna already do the Japanophile thing like, 10 years ago? I guess every pop star has to go through it.
And, what the heck, she even named them?
Stefani has taken the idea of Japanese street fashion and turned these women into modern-day geisha, contractually obligated to speak only Japanese in public, even though it's rumored they're just plain old Americans and their English is just fine. She's even named them "Love," "Angel," "Music" and "Baby" after her album and new clothing line l.a.m.b. (perhaps a mutton-themed restaurant will follow). The renaming of four adults led one poster on a message board to muse, "I didn't think it was legal to own human pets. But I guess so if you have the money for it." Salon.com: Gwenihana

I haven't been watching America's Next Top Model, but this clip is hilarious. Tyra's lips are flapping so furiously that her hair was flying around! Scroll down to the photo that says "Click on Tyra to hear a piece of her mind."

Pope Benny or Maddy?
I think after the initial "They're done already?" about the Papal Conclave, a feeling of disappointment started setting in. I was secretly hoping for the first brown pope ever (I was like "Go Arinze! Go Rodriguez Maradiaga! -- wow, that name's a mouthful). Kyle told me there's an Italian saying, "Always follow a fat pope with a skinny pope", essentially meaning that after a long-term guy, comes a short term guy. It looks like the Vatican is following this advice; Pope Benedict XVI is already 78 years old, only 6 years younger than JP II was at his death. And so the ghoulish Papal Death Watch continues. Wouldn't that kind of suck to get a job where people are already saying "Oh, he's a short-termer", which, when translated, actually means "Oh, he's a goner"?
Already Pope Benny doesn't seem to have that great charisma of JP II. The news channels keep showing that footage of JP laughing it up (although terribly ill) when he released the peace doves and they flew back in the building. This is always contrasted with Benny's awkward smiling and waving. The first thing I thought is, "that's not the kind of guy I can see kids running up to", and later that day a CNN correspondent read my mind and said the exact same thing. (Let's hope I don't always think the same way as CNN correspondents. Please.) He looks, well, like one of those old ladies who would scold kids for being too loud in a store. And speaking of scary old ladies, he reminds Kyle of Madeline Albright. Where has she been lately? Coincidence?

 Who is who?

Umbrella Obsession
I guess I'm not the only one with an minor umbrella obsession. This week's Slate Shopping column is all about them! My recent obsession with umbrellas stems from a few factors: 1) They actually aren't that cheap; even at the grocery store, they still cost upwards of $15-- a lot for something breakable and 'disposable', 2) They were super cheap in Holland, for whatever reason-- I'm talking the equivalent of $3 to $6, even for large ones, 3) It's harder than you'd think to find a cute one that isn't basic black, and 4) I'm always breaking them. Dari is also obsessed with umbrellas-- one of his first words was 'breya', when he was walking around with one of my many half-broken umbrellas.
My latest umbrella is super-cute, but when it gets a gust of wind, I'm guessing it won't hold up. We'll see! At least it's a cute orange and pink. I just don't get the basic black umbrella thing: if I'm going to put at least a bit of thought into my bags or shoes or other accessories, don't I want a cute umbrella too? The Dutch had it down; you could go to any store and there were tons of cool umbrellas for 4 euros. Now if only Chinatown would discover the $3 umbrella that's actually cute...
Slate: Un-brellas: How should you stay dry? eBags: ShedRain Rain Gems (same model as my umbrella, but not the same color) Eddie Bauer: Compact Mini Umbrella (really cute-- and actually cheap!) Coach: Personal Accessories (the cutest-- but not worth the splurge, in my opinion!)
The cutest of the cute-- but 148 dollahs??!!

Cookie Monster: Me eat vegetables!!!
It looks like Cookie Monster is now going to focus on "eating healthy":
"We are not putting him on a diet," said his spokesman, Truglio. "And we would never take the position of no sugar. We're teaching him moderation." The funniest thing about Cookie Monster though, is his lack of moderation! His crazed cookie binging is why he is Dario's favorite character on Sesame Street. Because he is eating, like, a dozen cookies at a time, cookie bits are flying all around him and he's growling and crazed.... well, ask any two-year-old-- it is hilarious. We'll have to see how this goes-- I can't imagine Cookie Monster nibbling on one little cookie with his pinky up.

Punxsutawney Phil
One of my fave movies ever, Groundhog Day, was on AMC last night. They have this thing lately called DVD TV, which is suspiciously a lot like Pop-Up Video (remember that? that was awesome!). Basically there's a bar across the bottom of the screen that is filled with trivia about the movie. I only caught the last third of the movie, but some of the things I learned:
- The writer, Danny Rubin, had originally conceived of the Groundhog Day timespan loop to be about 1,000 years. Basically, Phil would read hundreds and hundreds of books just by reading them one page per day. Director Harold Ramis didn't put a time span on the movie's conception of the loop, but later said he approximated it to be about 10 years. (That makes sense. I mean, the man does learn ice sculpture and how to play crazy jazz piano.)
- The movie was mostly filmed in Woodstock, IL, not Punxsutawney, PA.
- Groundhog Day has been a big hit with various spiritual communities. I even remember it being featured in a big Spiritual Film Festival at the Met a couple years back. It's popular for its concepts of rebirth (Buddhism), the importance of a life of good deeds (Christianity) and continuing work until God determines its perfection (Judaism).
- The studio wanted some kind of explanation, by way of science or witchcraft, for the time loop. Writer Danny Rubin very reluctantly wrote a scene in which an ex-lover puts a curse on Phil. Thankfully, it was never filmed. Harold Ramis said it would have detracted from the mundane nature of the film, which was important to the story.
- The studio felt that the homeless man's death was too much of a downer. But Ramis insisted on it-- he felt that the movie needed to address the idea of mortality, so that Phil understood that he was not, in fact, a god.
Overall, great movie. There is a lot about it that feels dated (Andie McDowell, I'm looking at you), but it is still one of my faves (and one that I still watched last night even though we already have the DVD!) It seems like at the time it was released, it was marketed as a run-of-the-mill comedy, but over time, critical opinion has changed. It seems that the balance of philosophical questions it raises (in line with other more serious movies like Eternal Sunshine), and great comedy via Bill Murray have raised it into what critics regard as a timeless (no pun intended!) movie. It's a NY Times Critics' Pick (as well as being on their list of Top 1,000 Movies), and is also on Roger Ebert's 100 greatest movies. Yay Punxsutawney Phil!

Blog feed is up and running
My friend Russ kicked me into gear about having an RSS feed. (For those that are not geeked out like me, an RSS or Atom feed allows my website content to be generated on other websites, such as news aggregators). To check out my new feed in action, set up a Bloglines account. When you are setting up the "My Feeds" section, and adding more credible publications such as CNN and the New York Times, you can add my humble website as well. Enter in for my URL http://www.cababa.com/atom.xml. The feed will then generate. Geeky goodness!

NERD breaks up, gets back together, breaks up, gets back together
I know Americans don't care, but Pharrell Williams started his own rumors that "NERD has expired". And then said later that they weren't. Maybe he thought he didn't need NERD because he was too busy designing more ugly Ice Creams, dancing in the background of Snoop videos, or just admiring his bare chest and ubiquitous camo shorts in the mirror.
NERD is one of those groups that is totally revered in Europe and Japan and that Americans just don't give a crap about, which is understandable, because Pharrell is annoying as hell. When we were in Europe last year, the Dutch MTV station basically devoted a week's coverage to a huge NERD London show. I have to admit, I like them and basically anything that they produce as the Neptunes. But I can still do without Pharrell's ugly-ass shoes.

"Ma'am, we're not going to go down there and enforce your Western bacon cheeseburger."
This is the craziest 911 tape I have ever heard. What is wrong with people?! Is it a sign in Revelation when people start calling emergency services when they don't like their cheeseburgers?
But dammit, she wanted her Western bacon cheeseburger done right! And the kids just got back from taekwondo! And they were mopping the floor instead of fixing her burger! Why oh why won't the police help her???
Good ol' Snopes (the Urban Legends site) leaves the status of this call as 'undetermined' although the OCPD seemed to verify that it was a call that was recorded about two years ago.
Thanks to Steve Z for the awesome link. Say hi to Staalstraat for me. :)

Adios Papa
With the passing of Pope John Paul II over the weekend, I've been feeling a lot of sadness, especially watching the 24-hour cable news coverage of the hours leading up to his death and afterwards. It's interesting-- as a Catholic, I suddenly feel connected to all the other Catholics I watched on TV, Catholics from all over the world, holding vigil at St. Peter's. It made me remember that the Catholic Church really is a worldwide organization, one in which American opinion and membership is practically inconsequential; another reminder that the world does not revolve around just us.
Some interesting notes on JP II:
- He was the 'sporting pope'. My favorite image of all those being trotted out was the one of him in a ski jacket-- a white one of course, just worn over the rest of his "Pope wear".
- He visited 129 countries, the first 'global pope'. The previously most-travelled pope had only visited nine countries.
- He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. The previous non-Italian, who died in 1523, was Adrian VI-- a Dutchman! John Paul II was the first Slavic pope.
- In the 1940s, he was hit by a car, then later, hit by a truck. He was shot at in 1981 in an assassination attempt.
The NY Times obit is really interesting, and comprehensive, to say the least! (All 19 webpages of it!) It'll be interesting to see, for the first time that I'm aware of it, (actually John Paul I died when I was three, but at that age, obviously, I wasn't paying attention) the whole conclave procedure and how the Vatican will announce the selection of a new pope. I wish they would stop showing those images of JP II's body laying in state-- it's creepy! I prefer the images of him during his lifetime-- the only Pope I really knew of in my lifetime.

Comments are working again
Kayleen informed me the other day that my comment code has been broken (for who knows how long!) so I finally fixed it. When it brings you to the comment page, you can select "Other" which means you don't have to set up a Blogger account, but you don't have to leave an anonymous post either. You can actually leave a comment, with just your name. What an innovation! Yeesh!
